6 years ago in 2010 – The Championship Swans eased into the last 16 of the League Cup thanks to a Scott Sinclair hat-trick in a 3-1 win at Peterborough United in the Carling Cup 3rd Round. Brendan Rodgers used the game against the League One leaders to hand a debut to DR Congo international goalkeeper Yves Makabu-Makalambay. Rodgers has worked with the keeper during during his tenure with the Chelsea back-room staff.14 years ago in 2002 – Brian Flynn’s first game in charge of the Swans ended in a 1-0 home defeat against Torquay United in Nationwide Football League Division Three.
The 3,872 crowd watched the Swans remain bottom of the entire football league.
20 years ago in 1996 – The Swans won 1 nil at Doncaster Rovers in Nationwide Football League Division Three thanks to a 4th minute goal from David Penney. It was the Swans first win at Doncaster in 25 years!
The Swans gaffer at the time, Jan Molby, handed a debut to Northern Irish centre-back Pat McGibbon – whom was on-loan from Manchester United. It was to be McGibbon’s one and only appearance for the Swans.
22 years ago in 1994 – Norwich City beat the Swans 3-0 at Carrow Road in a Coca-Cola Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg tie. Frank Burrow’s Division Two side were no match for their Premiership opponents and the defeat virutally ended any hopes the Swans had of progressing in the competition.
23 years ago in 1993 – Goals from Steve Torpey and Colin Pascoe earned the Swans a 2-1 victory over Oldham Athletic at the Vetch Field in this Coca-Cola Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg game. The 5,056 crowd savoured the Swans giantkilling win over their Premiership opponents.
31 years ago in 1985 – Defender Chris Harrison made his Swans debut in the 2 nil defeat at Reading in Canon League Division Three.
52 years ago in 1954 – Former Swans and Wales midfielder David Giles was born. Cardiffian Giles joined the Swans from Wrexham in November 1978 for £70,000. He made his debut ironically against Wrexham in December 1979 before scoring his first Swans goal against his childhood club Cardiff City in January 1980. Giles went on to make over 70 appearances for the Swans from 1979-1982 scoring 13 goals during his time at the club.
