The Swans Championship Play-Off hopes were dented as they lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace at the Liberty Stadium. The only thing the 13,663 crowd had to shout about was a 2nd half Gorka Pintado goal, as Roberto Martinez’s men dropped to 9th position in the table. The referee for the game was Roger East.

A 2-1 win at Colchester United in the Football League Trophy Semi-Final 2nd Leg, secured a 3-1 aggregate win for Kenny Jackett’s men, whom duly booked their place in the Football League Trophy Final at the Millennium Stadium. Two goals in 4 second half minutes from Leon Britton and Leon Knight ensured victory, as Keith Lowe made his Swans debut, before being stretchered off late in the game with a neck injury.

Hartlepool United beat the Swans 4-2 at the Victoria Ground in Nationwide Football League Division Three. Despite goals from Steve Watkin and Keith ‘Sky’ Walker, the Swans were soundly beaten by they mid-table opponents. Manager Alan Cork handed a Swans debut to striker Julian Alsop.

Two second half goals from Andy Legg, Paul Chalmers and a Johnson own goal, gave the Swans a comfortable 3 nil win over Wigan Athletic at the Vetch Field in Barclays League Division Three in front of a 3,726 crowd. The victory kept the Swans outside chances of a play-off place alive with Frank Burrows team moving up to 12th place on the league table.

The Swans drew 1-1 at Preston North End in Barclays League Division Three. Manager Ian Evans was thankful to a second-half strike from Alan Knill, as his team struggled to adapt to Deepdale’s artificial surface.
14 March 1987
Fellow play-off contenders Wolverhampton Wanderers hammered the Swans 4 nil at Molineux in Today League Division Four. The cash-strapped and injury plagued Swans were forced to hand manager Terry Yorath his Swansea City playing debut, coming out of retirement at 36 years of age. The defeat heavy – the second 4 goal thrashing in two away games – meant the Swans dropped to 7th place in the league table.
14 March 1980
Cambridge United ran out comfortable 4-2 winners at the Vetch Field in the Football League Second Division in front of 11,224. All John Toshack’s team had to show for their efforts was a goal in each half from Jeremy Charles and Tommy Craig.
Former Swans midfielder Joe Allen (B: 1990) and defender Stuart Jones (B: 1984) celebrate their birthdays today.
