I can recall Swans v Aston Villa on Boxing Day 1971 (I think?). I couldn't get into the North Bank, the Vetch was heaving with a crowd of over 25,000, and this was for an old 3rd Division game. I ended up behind the goal, under the double-decker west stand, close to the front. If my memory serves me right we were 1-0 up at half time, but eventually lost 1-2. They had a highly rated striker called Allan Evans, and I think he scored both their goals. They also had a goalkeeper called Jim Coombes, who was also a fast bowler for Worcestershire. One thing I will always remember though, very near the end, a deep cross came over about three foot off the ground, and Herbie Williams lunged at it with his right foot, and narrowly missed. But in so doing he slid off the playing surface and into the gravel surrounding the pitch, and almost into the crowd. As he got up he looked at the people at the front, myself included, and said "Well I couldn't f****** head it could I?"
Great memories. Does anyone else recall this game, and can they confirm the date and the result?
