I think the major problem we have had in the football club post Laudrup is in recruiting head coaches / managers with a different philosophy of how the game should be played. When Jenkins was chasing around the world(if you can believe that fact) I find it quite odd that equivalents to Roberto or Brendan could not be found on the continent, especially in Spain.
From the time when the academy was created we have had Monk, Guidolin, Bradley, Clement, Carvalhal, Potter and Cooper as first team head coaches with only Potter anywhere near to a comparison to Roberto or Brendan.
September 2013 saw the academy opened and even through the success years when promotion to PL2 and cups were won at U23 level, the style of football was nowhere near to the identity that was created that achieved promotion to the PL. What did happen though is that sufficient money was banked via sales of youngsters who had developed into very good professional footballers from academy football that came in handy to offset the loss of PL cash after relegation from the PL.
Until the time comes when a replacement for Russell Martin will have the same philosophy of how the game should be played then I am quite happy to see youngsters get a good all round education that will see them play for our first team and draw in admirers from PL clubs.
