1 year ago in 2016 – The Swans moved up to 17th place and climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Watford at the Liberty Stadium, thanks to Ashley Williams’ first half header. With new head coach Francesco Guidolin watching from the comfort of the West Stand, interim manager Alan Curtis guided the Swans to only their 2nd win in twelve league games.
Skipper Williams’ goal was the first (in the league) by a Swansea defender since March 2014, whilst Watford remained without a league win at Swansea since February 1983 – some 34 years ago!
14 years ago in 2003 – The bottom of Nationwide Football League Division Three Swans lost 3-1 at York City as Kevin Nugent made his debut for the Swans in front of a 4,611 crowd. It was the 6th consecutive league defeat for Brian Flnn’s men and all they had to show for their efforts at Bootham Crescent was a Jon Parkin own goal on 14 minutes.
17 years ago in 2000 – Two goals from transfer listed Tony Bird and Tommy Mutton were enough to give the Swans a 3-1 win at Inter Cardiff in the Welsh Premier Cup Qualifier.
20 years ago in 1997 – Despite Steve Torpey being sent off, a Jan Mobly free-kick ensured the Swans ran out 1-0 winners over Leyton Orient at the Vetch Field in Nationwide Football League Division Three. The gaffer’s 75th minute goal ensured his team remained in 5th place in the league table.
25 years ago in 1992 – Frank Burrows’ Swans lost 2-0 at the Vetch Field against promotion chasing Birmingham City in front of a Barclays League Division Three crowd of 4,147.
31 years ago in 1986 – The Swans lost 5-0 at Wigan Athletic in Canon League Division Three. Yet another defeat meant that caretaker manager Tommy Hutchinson saw his side move ever closer to the foot of the table to 21st position.33 years ago in 1984 – A brace from Ian Walsh saw the Swans draw 2-2 with Huddersfield Town at the Vetch Field in Canon League Division Two. A crowd of 4,944 watched John Toshack’s men climb up one place in the league table to 21st.
34 years ago in 1983 – The Swans beat Shrewsbury Town 2-1 at the Vetch Field in front of a Welsh Cup 4th Round crowd of 4,511. Two first half goals from Bob Latchford and Darren Gale eased the Swans passage into the 5th round and a meeting with Hereford United, again at the Vetch Field.
