Ben Cabango and Will Vaulks have been drafted into the Wales squad for the upcoming World Cup Qualifying games against the Czech Republic and Estonia, as replacements for defensive duo Rhys Norrington-Davies and Tom Lockyer.
Cabango, who wasn’t part of Robert Page’s original squad, missed the previous training camp after returning a positive coronavirus test.
Despite a return to full fitness, Wales head coach Rob Page revealed his reasons for leaving the 21 year old out of his original 28 man squad for the games, saying:
“We’ve got lots [of defenders], I like that balance of a left-sided centre-half to have a left foot,” said Page.
“Ben’s played well, he kept a clean sheet last week and he’s back in the Championship and playing all right.
“It’s not that he’ll never not be back involved in the squad, it’s just that, for this one, I’ve probably gone for one more attacking player than one more defender with what’s riding on the game.”
Cabango’s last appearance in a Wales senior shirt was in Wales 1 nil victory over Mexico in an international friendly in Cardiff in March 2021.
His only other match day involvement since that last appearance, has been as an unused substitute in Wales’ heavy Euro 2020 Round of 16 defeat at the hands of Denmark in Amsterdam.
