The West Yorkshire official started refereeing as a teenager when he was still playing local football. He took charge of his first National League game in October 2015 and was promoted to the National List of assistant referees in May 2013 at the age of 22.
Nield made his Championship debut in the 2022-2023 season with West Brom’s 1-0 home win against Reading and was also part of the referee exchange programme that included him doing three leagues in Japan’s J League in March of this year.
He will be a familiar name to many football fans as the the EFL referee who spoke about his “gruelling” work as an emergency nurse during the coronavirus pandemic, when he took up a role as a senior nurse/matron with the Acute & Emergency Service at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
