Swansea City head coach Luke Williams praised his team’s adaptability and resilience after they secured their first away win of the season at Coventry City.
Williams had urged his side to replicate the energy and intensity they had shown at home in their away performances, particularly after feeling they had been overrun in the first halves of defeats at Middlesbrough on the opening day of the season and more recently at West Brom. His players delivered, dominating the early stages at the CBS Arena, and deservedly taking a two-goal lead within the first half-hour.
Liam Cullen opened the scoring with a close-range finish, while Ollie Cooper doubled the advantage with a fine strike after a driving run from midfield.
Although Jack Rudoni quickly pulled one back for Coventry, Swansea demonstrated their resolve and defensive solidity, even handling a brief second-half stoppage due to a heavy rainstorm and lightning flashes. The Swans held on to secure back-to-back wins in the Championship and end their away-day frustrations.
Williams was pleased with the balance his team displayed, combining their attacking verve with a disciplined defensive effort to grind out the result.
“We showed our quality, particularly in the first half, and then there was the grit in the second half,” he said.
“The conditions were absolutely incredible at times as well, so we saw everything in that performance that makes a good team.
“I think I have been pretty tough and direct with the group on our away performances, they are not made of sugar so they have taken that on board and this is a great example of that.
“Coventry are a good team, they have great support inside this arena, but the players controlled themselves really, really well and put themselves in a good position.
“When we had to come off I think everyone is a bit anxious, because you can worry about switching off and the players are a bit anxious because they don’t know what is going on, and I think some of them thought the game had been postponed.
“If you allow your mind to drift it can be tough when it restarts, but the players did great and I am pleased that did not knock us out of our rhythm.”
