Garry Monk’s Swansea City side were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League Round of 32, after a 3-1 defeat in Napoli. Having out-played the Italian giants during the goalless draw at the Liberty Stadium, the Swans fancied their chances in the return leg against Rafael Benitez’s side.
However, two goals in 12 second half minutes eliminated the Swans, after Jonathan De Guzman’s 30th minute equaliser had given the Garry Monk’s men and the 900 or so travelling Jacks in the Stadio San Paolo hope of an historic away win.

A first half David Cotterill penalty, awarded by referee Gavin Ward, was enough to give the Swans a 1-0 win over Peterborough United in the Coca-Cola Championship in front of a 16,175 Liberty Stadium crowd. The victory meant the Swans consolidated their league position of 4th under Paulo Sousa.

John Hollin’s Swans were beaten 2-1 at Northampton Town in Nationwide League Division Two. The lowly Swans were given a first half lead thanks to Frenchman Nicolas Fabiano, but two goals in the last two minutes of normal time, turned the game on its head.

A Vetch Field crowd of 5,594 saw the Swans held to a goalless draw by Torquay United in Nationwide Football League Division Three. The home side were frustrated by the heroics of former Everton and Welsh International Neville Southall in the visitors goal.

The 22nd placed Swans secured their first home league win since October, as they beat fellow strugglers Walsall 2-1 at the Vetch Field. A goal in each half from Steve Torpey and John Hodge, sent the 3,546 crowd home happy as the Swans moved up a position in the league thanks to the win.

Swansea won 3-0 at Cambridge United in Barclays League Division Four. A crowd of 2,080 watched Terry Yorath’s side cruise to victory courtesy of goals from Chris Harrison, Ian Love and John Lewis, as former Spurs goalkeeper Peter Guthrie made his debut for the Swans at the Abbey Stadium.

The Swans beat Hereford United 2-0 at the Vetch Field in the Welsh Cup 5th Round to secure their 6th consecutive Welsh Cup Semi-Final appearance. A crowd of 2,235 saw Colin Pascoe score a penalty and defender David Hough secure the Swans passage into the semis.

The Swans made history on their first ever league appearance at Highbury win a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the First Division. John Toshack handed a debut to striker Ian Walsh, but it was former Gunner Ray Kennedy and Robbie James who stole the headlines thanks to goals in each half and stunned the 29,274 home crowd. The Swans moved up to 2nd place in the First Division table as a result, as the Gunners dropped to 4th.

High flying Swansea were held to a 2-2 draw by mid-table Chester City at the Vetch Field in Division Three. The 7,983 crowd witnessed the Swans come back twice from behind to share the points thanks to John Toshack and Nigel Stevenson.

The Swans lost 2-1 at Rochdale in Division Four as new manager John Toshack watched from the stands. Alan Curtis got the Swans goal after just 11 minutes but it wasn’t enough for the 5th place Swans who succumbed to their bottom of the table opponents.
Former Swans midfield and England International midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was born on this day in 1992.
