Swans on this Day – January 16

Have you ever wondered how the Swans did on a particular date in history or were just curious as to which league or competition they played in?

Maybe you’d even like to know when we’ve signed players or when a player celebrates his birthday!

Well now you can find out exactly what happened when the famous Swansea City played on 16th January.

Wednesday, 16 January 2013
An 86th minute Jack Wilshere goal helped Arsenal knock the Swans out of the FA Cup in a 3rd Round Replay at the Emirates stadium. Michael Laudrup’s team dominated the first half and were unlucky not to take the lead after former Arsenal defender Kyle Bartley had rattled the Gunner’s crossbar, but the home side eventually prevailed having had 26 attempts on goal.

Gorka Pintado’s first goal in ten months was enough to secure all 3 points for Swansea against fellow Championship side Leicester City at the Liberty Stadium. The Swans had to play the last 10 minutes with only 10 men, after defender Albert Serran left the field due to injury. The win, in front of a 15,037 crowd, sent Paulo Sousa’s Swans soaring up to fourth place in the table. It was sweet revenge for the Swans, whom had been knocked out of the FA Cup in the 3rd Round by the Foxes just a couple of weeks earlier.

Wednesday, 16 January 2008
Conference South side Havant and Waterlooville produced an FA Cup upset as they dumped League One leaders Swansea out of the FA Cup thanks to a 4-2 win at Westleigh Park. The reward for their 3rd Round replay win was a trip to Liverpool in the 4th Round. Goals from Guillem Bauza and Jason Scotland were not enough to save the Swans, who had a miserable evening in front of the 4,400 crowd, as Garry Monk scored an own goal and Leon Britton missed a penalty for Roberto Martinez’s side.

Saturday, 16 January 1993
The Swans drew 0-0 at Bradford City in League Division Two, in a largely uneventful encounter at Valley Parade for the 5,551 fans present.

Saturday, 16 January 1988
Despite Simon Davey having his first half penalty saved, the Swans overcame Scarborough 3-0 in a League Division Four game at the Vetch. The 4,366 crowd were treated to a inspired display from the returning Robbie James from Leicester City, as goals from Paul Raynor, Colin Pascoe and Keri Andrews saw the Swans secure the points.

The 5th placed Swans lost 2-0 at Leeds United in League Division One, in a game manager John Toshack felt should have been called off due to a frozen playing surface.

Friday, 16 January 1976
Northampton Town held the Swans to a 1-1 draw at the Vetch Field in front of a League Division Four crowd of 3,656. Striker Geoff Bray scored for the Swans.

Former Swans striker James Thomas was born on this day in 1979 and so was Scottish striker Craig Beattie, who was born on 16 January 1984.
