Swans on this Day – January 25

Have you ever wonder how the Swans did on a particular date in history or wondered which league they played in or which player grabbed the headlines? Well now you can find out exactly what happened when the boys in black and white played on 25th January or St Dwynwen’s Day (the Welsh equivalent to Valentine’s Day) as it is known here in Wales.

Doncaster v Swans in 20089 years ago in 2008 – Roberto Martinez’s top of the table Swans won 4 nil at 4th placed Doncaster Rovers in Coca-Cola League One. The 10,358 crowd at the Keepmoat Stadium were treated to a footballing masterclass by the Swans thanks to goals from Ferrie Bodde, Guillem Bauza, Jason Scotland (p) and Febian Brandy.

14 years ago in 2003 – The Swans beat Lincoln City 2-0 at the Vetch Field in Nationwide Football League Division Three. Brian Flynn handed a debut to Lenny Johnrose, as the bottom of the table Swans won their first league game since November, thanks to goals from Kevin Nugent and John Williams in front of a 5,009 crowd.

20 years ago in 1997 – Wigan Athletic beat Jan Molby’s Swans 3-2 at Springfield Park in Nationwide Football League Division Three. The 6th placed Swans gave a good account of themselves against the 2nd placed Latics with Graeme Jones (whom in later years would become assistant to Roberto Martinez at the Swans) proving to be the difference between the sides, despite Steve Torpey and a Pender own-goal for the Swans.

25 years ago in 1992 – A 10 minute hat-trick from Steve Thornber gave the Swans a dramatic 3-2 win at 3rd placed West Bromwich Albion in Barclays League Division Three. Manager Frank Burrows brought midfielder Thornber on as a replacement for Alan Davies in the 76th minute, and he netted the first of his 3 goals just three minutes later. The 10,395 Hawthorns crowd could hardly believe what they had witnessed with the Baggies coasting to a victory with just 14 minutes remaining – before Thornber’s introduction.

31 years ago in 1986 – Wolverhampton Wanderers beat the Swans 2-0 in a Canon League Division Three relegation battle at the Vetch Field. The 4,966 had very little to cheer about as Wolves recorded their first away win since October 1985. The defeat meant caretaker-manager Tommy Hutchinson’s team sank to the bottom of the table.
