The annual Swans Awards dinner was held at the Liberty Stadium and with a crowd of over 600 people attending, the evening was a great success.
All of the Swans management and playing staff attended with Chairman Huw Jenkins and his fellow board directors also present.
The evening started off with the Holt Brothers (who did a fantastic set at the Swans Trust London event but who have now been snapped up by the club it seems!) singing some songs to get the crowd in the mood. Rumour has it, the boys might be giving 20,000 people a taste of their music in the near future 🙂
Phil Sumbler the Swans Trust Chairman gave an introductory speech and Kev Johns then followed this with a game of Irish Bingo that was won by none other than Mark Gower! Mark was kind enough to donate the £250 winnings to Becky Gigg who came 2nd and then dinner was served.
The crowd was then greeted to some other speeches from Steve Mclelland and the man himself Brendan Rogers. Brendan talked about the season and the effort and committent of the players and how we are a unique club with a unique culture and approach. He thanked the fans for always walking with him and remembered Swans fans (and also people close to his own heart) that are no longer with us.
Swans Chairman Huw Jenkins then gave a speech about the inspiration and new ideas that Brendan brings and how we will continue to stick together and do things the right way as a club.
The Awards Ceremony itself was a great chance for everyone to relive a number of the moments of the season and also for the crowd to see clips of some of our Youth Players who have under Tony Pennock had a great season.
Scott Hancock was presented with the Youth Development Player of the Year and Danny Graham followed him as Top Goalscorer. Danny highlighted the Arsenal goal as his favourite goal of the season and said he was looking forward to scoring lots more goals next season!
The Swans Trust then presented their Lifetime Achievement award and their was smiles all around the room when it become clear that Kev Johns himself had won this years award. The award is voted for my Board Members of the Swans Trust and i know personally that every board member is proud and thankful for the work that Kevin does for Swansea City.
The player awards then got going and Club Ambassador was presented to Ashley Williams for all of his sterling of the field. Michel Vorm then picked up his first award of the night when Ugo and the Swansea City Travel Club awarded him the Away Player of the Year.
Joe Allen was then awarded the Young Player of the year before Vorm was again rewarded with another trophy and another bottle of Penderryn Whiskey for being voted the Players Player of the Year.
Throughout the evening, the crowd had the chance to vote for their goal of the season with 6 goals (Lita v Blackburm, Graham v Barnsley, Sinclair v Chelsea, Graham v WBA & Allen v Bolton) being chosen in the shortlist for the best goal. The crowd decided however that Gyfli Sigurdsson’s first goal away at Wigan was the best goal of the season and the noise got louder when Gylfi hinted that he would be keen to stay at Swansea moving forward!
The final award of the evening was presented and this was the biggie. Michel Vorm fought off competition from Leon Britton and Ashley Williams to win the Supporters Player of the Year and it was clear from his reaction that all 3 awards meant a lot to him.
The evening finished with an auction and the Holt Brothers coming back on the stage for another set of songs but by this time, everyone had got the autographs they had wanted and were left happy and content with another great night out.
A big thanks should go to the Swans Trust, the club’s commercial department and the Executive Fund Raising Committee for organising another fantastic evening. Another big thank you should go to the players and Brendan for happily posing for pictures and signing autographs throughout the evening. Most of the players would not have left until gone 11.30 and their dedication to the cause and to us as fans shows what a special club we have!
So, it was left for everyone to start planning their Elvis outfits ready for the big party on Sunday! What a great night to close off on what has been a fantastic season!
