Assessing Swansea’s Europa League chances

Europa LeagueSwansea fans were ecstatic last year as Michael Laudrup led his side to League Cup glory. As a result of last year’s Cup success the Swans get their first taste of European football with the Europa League, and they have taken to it like Swans to water. So, can they win it?

After three games Swansea look likely to qualify for the next round and Paddy Power currently price them at 4/6 to top their group. It is vital that Swansea top their group so they can avoid playing any of the Champions League drop-outs in the next round. If they can get a favourable tie in the next round they will be well placed to proceed.

Tottenham may be the current favourites to win the Europa League, but Swansea certainly have a squad capable of doing well. With Michu and Wilfried Bony up-front the Swans never lack goals. Michu set the Premier League alight last season scoring an impressive 18 goals, while over in Holland Bony scored 31 times. If the two forwards can contribute the goals in Europe then Swansea have every chance of going far. Goalkeeper Michel Vorm will be pivotal for the challenge ahead; the Dutch star is one of the best goalkeepers in England and will need to be at his best if Swansea are going to progress.

They are also blessed with a solid midfield which contains the talented Jonjo Shelvey and Pablo Hernadez, while Chico Flores and Ashley Williams are clearly formidable defenders.

A good team is nothing without a good manager. Luckily Swansea have a very talented manager in Michael Laudrup; the Dane was considered for both the Chelsea and Real Madrid jobs in the summer. Laudrup is the key ingredient for Swansea’s potential success; if he continues to get his tactics and team selection right then Swansea can go far.

Swansea’s 3-0 dismantling of Valencia proved the squad is capable of great things and if their confidence is high they are capable of beating any opponent who comes their way. Although dark horses, they do possess a significant chance of winning this tournament.
