Swansea continue to pursue PSV’s Santiago Arias

The transfer window slams shut on August 31, with Paul Clement looking to add at least two new faces before the international break. Swansea have already added Sam Clucas to their squad, with the midfielder joining from Hull for around £15m, and Santiago Arias is another name continually linked with a move to South Wales.

The Swans have been dealt a blow with the news of Kyle Bartley’s ligament injury, which will keep him out of the side until at least late October, and defensive reinforcements are required.

The former Leeds loanee started in the 4-0 defeat to Manchester United as part of a back three alongside Alfie Mawson and Federico Fernandez but lasted just 66 minutes and his steady presence will be missed.

Arias is a Colombian international who has played for the Eredivisie club for four years and is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League. He is fairly versatile and can operate at right-back or in a more central position which would work well in Clement’s fluid defensive system.

It is believed that PSV value Arias at around £12 million and the Swans have money to spend following Gylfi Sigurdsson’s transfer to Everton. It is thought an initial bid of around £2.5 million was dismissed by the Dutch behemoths but Swansea were simply testing the water and are likely to lodge a significantly larger bid in the next few days.

Sam Clucas has already arrived at the club following his £15 million transfer from Championship club Hull and Swansea fans will be hoping Arias will follow the former Chesterfield man through the entrance at the Liberty Stadium.

The 25-year-old has won two Eredivisie titles during his time in Eindhoven and has been capped 32 times at international level, while also reportedly catching the eye of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Arias has featured in both of PSV’s Eredivisie’s matches so far this season, which have seen them beat NAC Breda 4-1 and squeeze past AZ Alkmaar 3-2. He scored just twice last season, including on the final day of the campaign during his side’s 4-1 thumping of PEC Zwolle.

Joe Allen is another name linked with a return to South Wales, but Stoke are believed to be keen to hold onto the midfielder, who made 93 appearances for the Swans before signing for Liverpool in 2012.

After failing to find the net in their opening two matches, Swansea have been priced up as fourth favourites for relegation but with significant additions, they look certain to avoid the drop zone this season.

Tammy Abraham, who got off the mark in the Carabao Cup in midweek is priced at 71/1 to be the league’s top goalscorer with Sportsbet, which is an online Bitcoin sportsbook, and punters wishing to back the Chelsea loanee for success this season will be able to have a go at it and explore the many Premier League markets that are available on a weekly basis.

The loss of Bartley for at least eight weeks causes a greater need to strengthen the back line and Santiago Arias would be a superb addition. Paul Clement is looking to bolster his squad before the transfer window closes at the end of August and the Colombian appears to fit the bill.
