Russell Martin Press Conference ahead of Blades visit

Swansea City manager Russell Martin held his press conference earlier this afternoon, ahead of the visit of Sheffield United to the Swansea dot com stadium this weekend.

Here are the key items the manager spoke about before the Swans first home league game of the season in front of the Sky TV cameras on Saturday evening.

Fans returning to the Stadium

“I can’t wait, they’ve been brilliant since we got here. The number of messages we’ve had and the support, it’s been incredible.

Looking around at the staff on Tuesday night then looking up at our fans, we’ve got to give them a team they enjoy watching.”

Korey Smith and Liam Walsh Injuries

“Korey is not long term, but it’s also not instant. We have to make sure the time is right, but he is recovering well.

“I’ve played against Walsh as a player and he’s an excellent player. Similar to Korey, he won’t be back immediately”

New Signing Flynn Downes

“He’s ready, he’s had a good pre-season with the Ipswich U23s. He feels fit, he’s trained the last couple of days and he’s looked really good.

“He’s competitive, real winner’s mentality, he’s a good footballer and I think he’s got a bit of everything”

Matt Grimes – set to stay or go?

“With Grimesy, we want him to stay, we would like him to stay. He is our player, he is our captain and that won’t change.

“He is the ultimate pro, a brilliant captain in how he conducts himself and how he plays on the training pitch and on the pitch.”

“I have had a few conversations with him about it. He is settled here with his partner, he loves the area, has been at the club a long time and he has a great relationship with the fans.”

Ethan Laird Transfer Interest

“Personally, I love Ethan, I worked with him for four or five months.”

“He’s a brilliant character. He did really well for us on the pitch, but he’s not our player at the moment.

“I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t like to work with him again at some point.”

“But he’s not here. He’s at Man United at the moment. But as a player and a person he’s someone we really like.”
