Swansea City 1 Watford 2 – Under 18 Professional Development League

The Official Site match report is accurate enough in terms of key events in today’s 1-2 defeat. Also worth mentioning:

How well our young side coped when down to 10 men for the last 20+ minutes.  It was a real insight to watch and listen to Darren Davies coaching and coaxing his team through the rest of the match.

It was perhaps an error to keep Josh Carey on beyond the hour mark given how committed his is as a player. He’d been booked on half-time for the foul that gave away the free-kick for Watford’s opener and was always on a knife edge after that.

Iwan Morgan’s goal was a tribute to his bravery, legitimately chasing down the keeper to win possession to score.

For all their skill, the Watford side was a dispiritingly cynical one, milking challenges and encouraging a fussy and weak referee to take action at all opportunities. There are players in our side who can look after themselves. Perhaps they can be a little naive, but I wouldn’t say any of them are masters of the dark arts.

We were fielding a VERY young side for the last 10-15 minutes, this bodes really well for next season.

We’ve been treated to some very good games by the U18 this season, particularly since the turn of the year and many of the players have risen well with the challenge. Jada Mawongo particularly shone today.
