An excellent cup performance from our players against a very powerful Burnley side.
Although the 1st half was fairly even, the visitors were much more clinical and took the chances that came their way on 22 and 42 minutes. They came close again after the interval, hitting the stanchion from close range and keeper Ben Hughes keeping out a strong shot from a subsequent corner.
Ben Lloyd’s opener on 52 minutes was followed by a wonderful goal from Lincoln McFayden 5 minutes later – a fluent move starting with Harry Jones outside his own area and resulting in McFayden being sent clear by Cam Congreve to finish superbly.
Substitute Tarrelle Whittaker gave us a bit more variety up front and on 68 minutes created Lloyd’s 2nd goal with a clever pull back after getting to the Burnley byline. 5 minutes later, Congreve capped a fine display by working a path onto his left foot on the edge of the box and finishing confidently to put us 4-2 up.
Burnley didn’t give up, continued to get shots on target, Hughes saving twice in quick succession from winger Lewis and lively centre forward Mellon. Mellon somehow managed to shoot right across the face of goal in the 82nd minute from the edge of the 6 yard box.
Joe Thomas’s free header from a Cotterill corner in added time was the icing on the cake.
This was a very good Burnley team that we beat today. Strong Swans displays across the park, notably Cam Congreve, Lincoln McFayden, Ben Lloyd, Azeem Abdulai – who ran himself to a standstill – and Harry Jones, who stood up well against a very strong and mobile centre forward.
The OS report missed Burnley’s Mellon being subbed 6 minutes from time by Gromek.
A healthy gathering of our U18 present, including Seb Dabrowski, who’s unfortunately sidelined with a strapped up foot.
