Swansea City have announced the appointment of Jamie Sherwood as the women’s first-team manager for the 2024-25 season.
Sherwood, a UEFA ‘A’ Licence holder with over 20 years of experience in football, has coached in the Women’s Super League (WSL) and has held various roles in the men’s, women’s, and college games.
Sherwood has a strong background in player development, having worked with the Football Association of Wales, Cardiff and Vale College, and Cardiff City Women. His task will be to elevate on-field standards following the team’s integration into the football club last summer.
Sherwood’s coaching career began with Cardiff City Ladies in 2012, where he led the team to Welsh Cup success in his first season. He then took them to runners-up positions in the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division and the English Premier League Cup, securing promotion to the National Division.
In 2014, Sherwood joined Yeovil Town Ladies, leading them to the top tier by winning the Women’s Super League 2 title in 2016 and earning a nomination for the League Managers’ Association coach of the year. He coached Yeovil in the WSL 1 during the Spring Series in 2017 and the 2017-18 season. During his time at Yeovil, he was assisted by former Swansea City Ladies Head Coach Colin Staples, who stood down from his role with the Swans in June 2021.
Sherwood continued his success with Barry Town United’s under-23 side, winning the JD Cymru South title before returning to Yeovil, now known as Bridgwater. His most recent role was with Canadian semi-professional side Electric City, where he was in charge for five months.
Alice Weekes, Swansea City’s head of women’s football, expressed her excitement about Sherwood’s appointment, highlighting his experience and passion for developing young players. Swansea City Chairman Andy Coleman praised Sherwood’s transformational potential and extensive experience, noting the positive impact he and Weekes will have on women’s and girls’ football in Swansea and across Wales.
During his interview, Sherwood himself expressed his honour at being named first-team manager and his commitment to competing for success and developing talent in south-west Wales. He looks forward to energizing the team and achieving success in the coming season.
Given Sherwood’s vast experience in the Women’s game, we have no doubt he is a great acquisition for the Swansea City Women’s team and wish him all the very best during his tenure at the club.
