Backhouse has been an EFL referee since 2017 and became the first Cumbrian official for more than 40 years to be added to the EFL Referee list.
After beginning refereeing aged 14 in the Carlisle Glass Longhorn Youth League, Backhouse has officiated over 160 EFL matches as a referee, earning promotion to Select Group 2 for the 2023/24 season.
His first Championship game was the goalless draw between Coventry City and Cardiff City in December 2022.
His career highlights to date include refereeing the National League Play-Off Final in 2017, being Fourth Official in the 2022 FA Trophy Final and referee in the FA Vase Final in 2023, having also officiated FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Papa John’s Trophy and Women’s Super League Cup games in recent seasons.
