Name: Bhupinder Singh Gill
Birthplace: Staffordshire
During the 2022-2023 season, referee Sunny Singh Gill achieved a historic milestone, when he became the first British South Asian referee to officiate an EFL fixture since his father, Jarnail Singh, did so over a decade ago.
This historic event occurred in August 2022, when Sunny Singh Gill refereed the Sky Bet League Two match between Northampton Town and Hartlepool United.
His appointment marked a ground-breaking moment as the most senior referee of British South Asian heritage in the country.
In June 2022, Gill earned a promotion to the EFL after impressing in the National League. Refereeing seems to be a family affair for the Gills, as Gill’s brother Bhupinder also contributes to the game by working as an assistant referee in the EFL.
Gill made his EFL Championship debut in November 2023, when he oversaw the goalless draw between Huddersfield Town and Watford.
