Swans on This Day – November 16

With each passing day, history is made somewhere by someone so it’s often interesting to look back on what your beloved football team has done on this day in history in years gone by. Read on to find out what happened when the Swans played on 16th November.

Scott Sinclair6 years ago in 2010 – Swansea City’s leading goalscorer Scott Sinclair made his debut for the England Under-21s in a 2-0 defeat against Germany in the BRITA Arena, Wiesbaden.

The England team that day also featured future Swans signings Steven Caulker, Josh McEachran and Jack Cork.

9 years ago in 2007 – The Swans suffered their 2nd home defeat of the season in the 1 nil loss to Huddersfield Town at the Liberty Stadium in Coca-Cola League One. A crowd of 12,185 watched Roberto Martinez’s 4th placed side dominate the game but fail to take their chances, as the Terriers grabbed all 3 points.

17 years ago in 1999 – John Hollins Swans were held to a goalless draw at the Vetch Field by Cheltenham Town in Nationwide Football League Division Three. The 4,299 crowd endured a frustrating afternoon as the mid-table home team failed to break down a lowly Robins team who had clearly come to park the bus.

20 years ago in 1996 – Bristol City took the Swans to an Littlewoods Pools FA Cup 1st Round Replay after holding Jan Molby’s men to a 1-1 draw at the Vetch Field. An entertaining game saw Steve Torpey grab a 2nd half equaliser for the Swans, whom also had Kwame Ampadu sent off for two bookable offences.

25 years ago in 1991 – A bumper Vetch Field crowd of 9,315 saw the Swans beat bitter rivals Cardiff City 2-1 in the FA Cup 1st Round. Despite the Bluebirds taking the lead through Chris Pike, goals from former Cardiff striker Jimmy Gilligan and Mark ‘Chopper’ Harris gave manager Frank Burrows and the Swans faithful the bragging rights in the South Wales derby.

Unfortunately the game hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons due to violence before and after the game, which raised fears of further violence for the Autoglass Trophy game against Cardiff at the Vetch just 3 days later.

31 years ago in 1985 – Non-league Vauxhall-Opel side Leyton Wingate were beaten 2 nil at the Vetch Field in the FA Cup 1st Round. The 3,295 crowd saw defender Andrew Melville make his Swans debut in a bruising encounter in which Colin Pascoe broke his leg, Leyton Wingate had their captain sent-off and a goal in each half from Alan Waddle and winger Phil Williams.

38 years ago in 1978 – Swansea City goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel was born in Munich, Germany. Tremmel joined the Swans on 30 August 2011 on a free transfer from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.
