What’s Hillsborough Like

Up to 3,700 away fans are in the West Stand, known as the Leppings Lane end of the ground.

There are a few supporting pillars in this stand, which could spoil your view. Pies, sausage rolls, burgers and hot dogs are sold.

Down Leppings Lane there is a programme and football memorabilia shop, in front of the stadium into Herries Road.

Bottles of Carling and Kingston Press and Bulmers are sold along with cans of John Smiths and Guinness along with miniature bottles of wine and spirits.

Visiting Sheffield

Sheffield is one of the north’s main cities and as such has plenty of nightlife, restaurant and bar options, making it an ideal destination for a weekend away.

If you want to be in the heart of this bustling city, then there are plenty of popular hotels in the city centre including an Easyhotel, Jurys Inn, Hampton by Hilton, Novotel and an Ibis, all of which are around 3.2 miles away from Hillsborough.

The nearest private accommodation near Hillsbrough is Alara (S6 2DH) which is 0.2 miles away, The Garrison Hotel (S6 2GB) is 0.7 miles away and William’s Hillsborough Apartments (S6 2LX), is about a mile from the stadium.

Eating and Drinking in Sheffield

Horse & Jockey (S6 4EF) is 0.6 miles from the ground. The Wadsley Jack (S6 4BJ) is 0.9 miles, going away from Sheffield Centre and has a good choice of food.

The New Barrack Tavern (S6 2GA) serves a good selection of real ales and imported lagers. They have local pork pies behind the bar and its a 0.8 mile walk from the ground.

There are plenty of pubs choices in the city centre; opposite the train station The Howard (S1 2LW) welcomes away fans, it’s 3.5 miles from the ground. It has draught beers and three ales on tap and a good selection of food and it’s a 10 minute walk to Castle Square tram station.

The tram route from Sheffield Station to Hillsborough passes a few real ale pubs, including The Red Deer (S1 4DD) 2.7 miles away, The Harley (S10 2HW) 3 miles away, The Wellington (S3 7EQ) 2 miles away, The Fat Cat (S3 8SA) and Kelham Island Tavern (S3 8RW) both 2.2 miles away.

Hillsborough Fish Bar (S6 1TD) is pretty much outside the stadium, and has very good food and is always busy. When ordering, asks for scraps, the bits that fall off battered food, they are added to your meal order, which are delicious and very popular in this part of Yorkshire.

Bieres Pork Sandwich Shop (S6 4GW) does amazing pork sandwiches with crackling.

Parking near Hillsborough

There’s some street parking if you arrive early, otherwise there are some unofficial car parks along the A61 that charge around £4.

There is a car park directly behind the Kop and the Wednesday Club shop (£7).

You can park at Meadowhall Shopping Centre by J34, of the M1, where you can park for free then take a yellow tram to Leppings Lane, which costs less than £3 return and takes about 35 minutes.

Unlike most grounds these days, there are a large number of private car parking spaces near Hillsborough, which you can reserve from just £3.00 for the day.

Trains to Sheffield

The train station is 3.4 miles away from Hillsborough, so either take a taxi to the ground (which usually costs around £10) or catch a bus from the bus station across the road.

Number 53 to Ecclesfield runs every 10 minutes for the 30 min ride and on match day, football shuttles run from the far side of the bus station.

Supertram has a stop next to the train station runs every 10 minutes.

Blue trams going towards Malin Bridge, to the Hillsborough stop, a 10 minute walk to the ground. An all-day ticket is cheaper than two singles.

A train from Swansea will take 4 and a half hours to get to Sheffield.

  1. The tram stop isn’t next to the station, it’s just in town – a 5 min walk. The best tram to catch is the tram heading for Middlewood that stops at Leppings Lane – which is the away end.
