The Swansea City Ladies started their Adran Premier League campaign with a last-gasp 2-1 win at Cardiff Met Women at the Cyncoed Campus.
Despite the Swans looking the more threatening in the early stages, it was Met who opened the scoring when Emily Allen latched onto a ball over the top, brushed off the challenge of Ria Hughes and calmly slotted the ball in off the far post in the 14th minute.
The Swans clearly rocked by the goal, hit back almost immediately when striker Stacey John-Davis hit the post from a tight angle. Cardiff Met’s O’Leary was shown a yellow card on 32 minutes, as the remainder of the first half saw neither side create any clear cut chances, with Met taking a 1 nil lead into the half time interval.
Right from the start of the Second Half, the Swans Ladies went on the attack and their perseverance was rewarded on 49 minutes when Chloe Chivers split the Met defence with a lovely through ball, which Stacey John-Davis then dinked over the on-coming Annabel Sweeney to draw last season’s League Champions level.
Met who had rarely threatened since their first half goal, responded well to the equaliser and almost regained the lead on 55 minutes, when former Swan Sophie Hancocks well hit free-kick, was tipped onto the bar by Claire Skinner in the Swansea goal. It was a big let off for the Swans!
The Swans kept pushing forward looking for the all important second goal, creating several chances, with both Katy Hosford and Chloe Chivers shooting wide of the target.
The introduction of Laura Davies for Kelly Adams and Rhianne Oakley who came on for Chloe Chivers during the last quarter, saw the Swans began to take control of the game with Oakley’s pace and direct running causing the Met defence all sorts of problems.
It came as no surprise when the Swans pressure finally told, when they were awarded a penalty in the 89th by referee Cheryl Foster, after another strong run by striker Oakley, saw her bundled to the ground by Met goalkeeper Annabel Sweeney.
Up stepped defender Shaunna Jenkins, who clattered the up right with her spot kick but made sure with the rebound to give the Swans the lead and all three points in dramatic fashion.

The Swans Ladies next game is on Sunday, 12 September against Pontypridd Town at the USW Sports Park (2pm).
