Swansea City 1 Millwall 2 – Under 23 Professional Development League

The Swans lined up with Southend trialist Harry Seaden in goal; a middle three of Cam Evans, Tiv Rushesha and skipper Ben Erickson; wingbacks Joe Thomas and Lincoln McFayden; a deep lying Azeem Abdulai with Sam Leverett, Ben Lloyd and Cameron Congreve supporting Forrester in the lone striker role.

Swans conceded on 15 minutes – a combination of poor play on the edge of the box that conceded a free kick compounded by poor setting of the defensive wall that enabled a strike from O’Brien to go into the opposite corner from where Seaden was positioned.  The goalie doesn’t look the 6’1″ his playing profile suggests.

Given the playing setup, we saw a fair amount of midfield possession, but not much in the way of chances until McFayden got around the defence and sent a shot across goal on 31 minutes.  That preceded the best moment of the match 6 minutes later – a smart turn on the edge of the box and sharp left footed shot from Congreve to equalise.

The good work was undone right on half-time by unforced passing errors that allowed Millwall’s Briscoe to get past Rushesha and comprehensively beat Seaden.

Each of the midfielders had their moments, but we didn’t really click as an outfit until Whittaker’s introduction alongside Forrester.  McFayden in particular found more space, although the final balls into the box were frequently wayward. 3 clear opportunities came Forrester’s way in the final stages, but he seemed over anxious. On balance I’d say we deserved a point, but it wasn’t to be.  Millwall were a decent side and made the most of the chances that came their way.

Cam Evans was booked on 24 minutes, Topalloj on the half hour and Okoli and Forrester for a bout of scuffling on 72 minutes.

Kevin Nugent managed the Millwall side, up against former team mate Kristian O’Leary.

Russell Martin and Mark Allen were in attendance.
