A very refreshing and ultimately decisive 4-0 victory for our U21 today.
The heavens opened with about 20 minutes to go. Great credit to the players for continuing without any letup. The rain was biblical.
Line-up in a fluid 3-4-2-1 formation: Ben Hughes; Harry Jones (sub Kai Ludvigsen 77), Brandon Cooper, Nathanael Ogbeta; Joe Thomas, Azeem Abdulai (sub Tarrelle Whittaker 65m), Joel Cotterill, Lincoln McFayden (sub Kian Jenkins); Cameron Congreve, Ben Lloyd (sub Corey Hurford 77m); Josh Thomas.
Lots of flowing movement throughout our team and making good use of Thomas and McFayden in the wide positions to find space for crosses. Although it’s slightly awkward for him playing on the right side, Cameron Congreve looked completely assured in possession. Joel Cotterill also shone, but it was very much a team performance.
What was particularly impressive was the way the entire eleven kept going throughout. The substitutes played their part as well. QPR, who’d had opportunities in the first half, looked thoroughly beaten in the 2nd half. A mention also to Ben Hughes, whose saves kept us level early in the game.
Josh Thomas finally got his goal when capitalising on a visitors’ defensive mishap that set him free to round the keeper and score into an empty net from distance.
Goals: Cotterill (pen) 40m; McFayden 51m; Josh Thomas 63m; Whittaker 84m.
