The Swans secured their first win of 2023 as they beat 10 man Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Although Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien was sent off after just 18 minutes for a reckless challenge on Oli Cooper, the Black Cats managed to keep the Swans at bay until the half time interval.
The second half belonged to the Swans, as Joel Piroe put the Swans ahead on 50 minutes, before Dan Neil equalised for the Black Cats. But Russell Martin’s men weren’t to be denied, as two goals in 10 minutes from the Liam Cullen and Oli Cooper, ensured the 3 points would be coming back to south Wales.
After the game, Russell Martin was clearly pleased with his players and how they handled a hostile atmosphere at the Stadium of Light, adding “On the whole, I’m really pleased. I told the players in the dressing room to enjoy it because you have to enjoy that feeling, especially when it is away from home.”
Swansea City can now look forward to their FA Cup 3rd Round replay against Bristol City at the Swansea.com stadium on Tuesday night, with the winners facing a fourth round tie at home against Chesterfield or West Bromwich Albion.
