Swansea City’s Carabao Cup campaign came to an abrupt end as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers, with Richard Kone’s first-half strike proving decisive at the Swansea.com Stadium.
Kone’s well-taken finish from a throw-in gave Wycombe a first-half lead and they held on to progress to the third round despite sustained pressure from the hosts.
Although Swansea improved in the second half, they were unable to find an equaliser. New signing Florian Bianchini and captain Matt Grimes came closest for the Swans, but Wycombe held firm.
Head coach Luke Williams was visibly frustrated with his side’s lacklustre performance, which lacked the necessary energy and intensity, calling it “completely unacceptable” in his post-match interview.
Williams made eight changes to the side that drew with Cardiff City, with debuts for Bianchini and Nelson Abbey, who was also celebrating his birthday. Kyle Naughton, Kristian Pedersen, Nathan Tjoe-A-On, Jay Fulton, Azeem Abdulai, and Žan Vipotnik also came into the starting line-up.
The Swans return to Championship action on the weekend when they travel to the Hawthorns to face West Bromwich Albion.
