Background:
Simpson started refereeing in the Football League during the 2011/12 season, when he was the match referee for Crewe’s 4-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge in League Two.

He has been a referee in the Championship since the 2012/13 season.

Simpson is also a former international assistant referee (2008-2012) and has officiated in Champions League, Europa League and international games.
