The Swansea City Ladies will learn their UEFA Women’s Champions League opponents this Friday, 2nd July, when the First Round Draw will be made.
It is the fifth time that the Ladies have been in the competition, which this year features a new format and distribution of prize money – meaning the stakes are higher than ever for the 44 teams involved in the competition.
The new format includes a 16-team group stage as well as centralised marketing and TV coverage, along with a different financial distribution model, with leagues benefitting, not just the competing the clubs.
You can learn how the new Women’s Champions League format with group stage will work on the UEFA website.
For the draw, the Swans Ladies will be in the ‘Champions’ stream, where there will be two pots, made up of seeded and unseeded teams, with two teams from each pot being drawn to form groups of four, with games being played in a single host country.
The competition is knock-out from the start; a seeded team will face one of the non-seeds in their group and the winner will go on to play the victor of the other fixture, with the winner of that game progressing to the 2nd Round and the two losers having a third-place play-off.
These First Round Group Stage fixtures will be played on Wednesday, 18th August and Saturday, 21st August.
After bowing out of the competition last season at the hands of Cypriot side Apollon Ladies, Ian Owen’s team will be determined to go a step further this time around.
Possible opponents for the Swans include some familiar sides from previous campaigns, such as Apollon Ladies and Romanian side Cluj or they could even face some British and Irish teams in the shape of Glasgow City, Glentoran and Peamount United.
Other names in the draw to look out for include Juventus, Twente, Benfica, Anderlecht, Beşiktaş and PAOK.
You can watch the First Round Draw live from 12pm BST on Friday, 2 July on UEFA.com.
The 2021/22 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final will be played on Sunday, 22 May 2022 in the Allianz Stadium in Turin, home of Juventus.
