Swansea City 3 Hull City 2 – Under 18 Professional Development League

A tough and competitive game in very unkind circumstances – it was harsh enough having to sit in the stand being blown about the place, the effect on the players and their judgement of passes was notable.

In spite of fielding 5 trialists, Hull were a very decent side and on another day might have got something from the game.

Although the personnel were different, the line-up was a familiar one at this level: 3-4-1-2, with Charlie Veevers supporting Iwan Morgan and Corey Hurford up front; Josh Edwards and Josh Carey in the middle, Dan Watts and Zane Myers either side as wing backs, with David Roberts, Filip Lissah and Richard Faakye serving as the back 3 in front of Ben Hughes.

Morgan and Hurford were busy early on and Morgan found himself in space to convert on 9 minutes from a Dan Watt cross and after a great through ball from Josh Edwards that put us through. We had other chances to add to the score but Hull got a surprise equaliser on 31 minutes when we revisited earlier season sloppiness with poor distribution out from the back being cut out and punished.

Our set pieces were well planned and thoughtful: Lissah forced a save with a volley from Veevers’ corner, then Faakye volleyed home from a further corner on half-time.

Veevers had a shot that breezed the post on 60 minutes, Hull threatened again with fresh substitutes, but it was Swansea who got the crucial next goal on 71 minutes, Myers displaying great determination to retain the ball on the left and centre for Bony to claim the 3rd from close range, although it looked like the Hull defender got there first.

Hull’s skipper scored one well-taken free-kick to pull the visitors back in sight and 4 minutes later hit the bar with a similar effort. We rode our luck at times, although in the round it was a well deserved win. Right at the end, keeper Ben Hughes lost a high ball in the wind and somehow Hull contrived to put the loose ball wide of the post, but otherwise he made decent saves at key times.

Picks for our side were Dan Watts, plus the tigerish middle duo of Edwards and Carey.  Morgan and Hurford have a lot to offer and will get better with time and experience.  Zane Myers offered a good outlet.  Charlie Veevers did well in an unusual role from him, although he still managed to get himself booked for a flare-up in added time.

A good result from Ice Station Zebra.

Once again, Darren Davies’s synopsis of the game as related on the official website reads spot-on.

Russell Martin and Matt Gill watched the first half.
