Swansea City head coach Luke Williams expressed his disappointment after his team was narrowly defeated by Burnley at Turf Moor, losing 1-0 to a stoppage-time penalty from Jay Rodriguez.
The Swans were close to earning a well-deserved point in what would have been a strong conclusion to a demanding period, having won their two previous matches against Oxford United last Saturday and Watford on Tuesday evening.
Throughout the game, Swansea showed resilience and defensive determination, with standout performances from central defenders Ben Cabango and Harry Darling. Goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux also played a crucial role, making significant saves to keep the visitors in contention.
The Swans managed to create several notable chances: Liam Cullen had a header cleared off the line, while Florian Bianchini and Joe Allen came close to converting opportunities.
However, deep into injury time, referee David Webb awarded Burnley a penalty after ruling that Matt Grimes had handled the ball during a scramble following a Burnley set piece. Rodriguez stepped up and confidently converted from the spot, sealing a dramatic win for the hosts.
Williams acknowledged the painful nature of the defeat but took positives from the performance. He noted that his side matched Burnley—a team with recent Premier League experience and strong promotion ambitions—in many areas of the game. While the result was a tough pill to swallow, Williams felt the team’s effort and commitment demonstrated their ability to compete at a high level.
“It was a tough way to lose,” said the Swans boss, adding “I thought we probably deserved a draw, so to lose all the points so late on is difficult”.
