A visit to Leckwith in atrocious weather is never a pleasant prospect. Actually, given that Leckwith resembles a grim piece of austere Soviet Bloc architecture and has no open refreshment facilities, you could quite easily remove 3 words from that opening sentence without changing the sentiment. I came here last January to watch our U18s …
Our U18s marched on into the PDL Cup Semi-Finals with a comfortable win over a desperately poor Doncaster Rovers side here at Landore. Wingers Kai Rhodes and Callum Jones had free rein today, both creating and scoring to put early distance between the two teams. Rovers had no way of dealing with either player. We …
A confusing end to an otherwise strong performance by a very young U18s squad today at Landore, in conditions that were bitterly cold, blustery and rainy for much of the afternoon. After the FA Youth Cup heroics against Leeds earlier in the week, it was a much-changed selection, which operated as 3-5-2: Jakub Nowak; Kaven …
With some apologies for the late report – the only excuse is that I’ve done a fair bit of travelling over the past couple of days – here’s a brief narrative of what turned out to be a thoroughly memorable win over Category One side Leeds United at York. The match was played in York …
Coming off the back of last weekend’s 4-1 age grade cup win against the same opponents at Leckwith, today’s victory over our South Wales rivals was deserved and hard earned. On a sunny day wintry at Landore, the line-up was a familiar 4-3-3. Jon Beale, who was previously at the academy before moving off to …
In the first home game in over a month, our U18s achieved a special victory today against near neighbours Bristol City. The last match here was a comprehensive 4-7 defeat to Bournemouth, so today’s outcome will taste especially sweet. We lined up initially 4-3-3 but varied the formation during the game, particularly when the visitors …
A very young U18s squad played out a 3-1 defeat to a comparatively more experienced Wigan Athletic team at Landore. Still missing a number of otherwise eligible players through international duties, coach Joe Roberts picked a side that included 4 Under 16 players plus a further 3 among the substitutes. Close season signing centre half …
I was able to attend only the first half of this morning’s U18s fixture with Hull until leaving for the first team appointment against Watford, so it was pleasing to learn that from being one up at the interval we’d earned a convincing 5-1 win by full-time. In the first half, we played attractively and …
4-0 sounds like a thoroughly convincing victory, but our U18s didn’t have things all their own way this morning at Landore. Opponents Fleetwood gave as good as they got during a competitive 1st half and only succumbed only through a flurry of 2nd half goals and a dismissal, which took the wind out of their sails. There …
A bright game on a bright day but, over the course of the 90 minutes, our young U18s squad fell short and lost 2-1 to Brentford. We deserved better, had the best of the play and chances, we rather ran out of steam and Brentford clinically took the few opportunities they had to seize the …
