Williams praises players for grit and effort in Hull win

Swansea City head coach Luke Williams praised the grit and determination of his players after they beat Hull City 1-0 at the MKM Stadium. The Swans claimed their first league win under Williams, thanks to Liam Cullen’s early goal.

Cullen strikes from a clever corner

The Swans took the lead in the 11th minute, when Josh Tymon whipped in a low corner from the left and Cullen swept home a left-footed shot from 12 yards.

The goal was the result of a well-worked set-piece routine that Williams credited to his assistant head coach Alan Sheehan and head of goalkeeping Martyn Margetson.

“It’s something the players worked on with Alan Sheehan in the week,” Williams said. “I just watch on in awe because he is a genius and then the players have to deliver on the actions they have been shown, and they did that immaculately and it was enough to win us the game.”

Swans defend stoutly against the Tigers

Williams hailed the defensive display of his team, who kept their first clean sheet in six games. “We defended well too, it felt like there were about 50 players in the box at the end. They threw everything at us, they had a six-and-a-half foot goalkeeper up in the box trying to get them a goal,” he said. “We needed to stand up to that, and we did that brilliantly.”

Williams delighted with the team spirit

In his post-match interview, Williams said he was delighted with the team spirit and the fight shown by his players.

“I am delighted. To win and get a clean sheet are two things that are perfect, but inside that was the grit and determination of the players who showed they are fighting for their club,” he said. “I think that is equally as important (as the win and clean sheet), because the opposition are an excellent side, so to come here and keep a clean sheet is a tall order on its own.”

Williams also thanked the travelling fans, who made the long trip to the MKM stadium in East Yorkshire and cheered the team on throughout the game.

“The fans were unbelievable, they were so loud and supportive. They made the difference for us, they gave us that extra energy and belief. We are so grateful to them for making the journey and backing us all the way,” he said.
